Defence That Understands Service Life

Facing military proceedings is unlike anything else.

Military law operates under a separate legal framework — with its own rules, pressures, and consequences. Whether you're facing a service police interview, an AGAI, or a Courts Martial, the stakes for your career, your rank, and your future are enormous. You need a solicitor who understands Service life — not just the law.

Called In for Interview?

You are entitled to free Legal Aid representation at any service police station — including overseas. Never speak without a solicitor present.

Facing an AGAI?

Administrative action can end your career without a criminal conviction. We advise from the very first notice and represent you through every stage.

Summoned to Court Martial?

Courts Martial carry serious consequences including imprisonment and discharge. Early, specialist representation is the single most important thing you can do.

Serving Overseas?

We cover all British Sovereign Base Areas including Cyprus. Wherever you're based, we can be there for you.

What We Cover

Military Law Services

We represent Army, Navy, and RAF personnel across the full spectrum of military legal proceedings — in the UK and overseas.

Service Police Station Interviews

Free Legal Aid representation at any military police station, in the UK or overseas. We attend in person and advise you before and during interview — so nothing you say can be used against you without proper legal protection.

Interview After Caution

If you've been cautioned and asked to attend a further interview, this is a critical moment. We advise you on whether to answer questions or exercise your right to silence — and we're with you throughout.

Courts Martial

Courts Martial can result in imprisonment, dismissal, and a permanent criminal record. Legal Aid is assessed via AFCLA. We provide full representation — from first hearing through to verdict and, if needed, appeal.

AGAI — Administrative Action

Administrative action can cost you your rank, your career, or your pension — without ever going to court. We advise on your rights from the moment you receive notice and represent you through the AGAI process.

Summary Hearings

Summary hearings before your Commanding Officer carry real disciplinary consequences. We prepare you fully, advise on your plea, and ensure your case is presented in the strongest possible terms.

Court Martial Appeals

If you have been convicted at Courts Martial and believe the verdict or sentence was wrong, you have the right to appeal. We advise on the merits of appeal and provide full representation through the appeal process.

AWOL & Misconduct

Absence without leave and conduct-related charges are treated seriously by the Armed Forces. We advise on the circumstances, the likely outcomes, and build the most effective mitigation for your situation.

Unacceptable Sexual Behaviour

Allegations of unacceptable sexual behaviour under Armed Forces regulations are serious and career-ending if not properly defended. We provide discreet, expert advice and robust representation throughout.

Overseas & Sovereign Base Areas

We represent personnel at Military Police Stations in British Sovereign Base Areas including Cyprus, as well as other overseas postings. Distance is not a barrier — contact us as early as possible.

Why E&L Legal

We know Service life.
We know military law.

Amanda Sheppard served in the British Army — in both military and civilian roles, in the UK and in British Sovereign Base Areas. She is a member of the Association of Military Court Advocates (AMCA). This isn't a niche we've stumbled into — it's expertise built from the inside.

One of very few firms in England and Wales able to offer free Legal Aid representation at all Military Police Stations including overseas, we combine that rare capability with a genuinely personal approach. You deal with a named solicitor, not a call centre.

"The best solicitor in the North West"

Peter Haney is the most professional and knowledgeable solicitor I have come across. He understands the case and has so much knowledge in the legal sector. He is always available when he says and literally has your back — which is what you need.

"First class solicitor"

Amanda answered all my questions with great clarity and patience. She kept me informed every step of the way, which gave me great peace of mind. She was fantastic right through my case — believe me, it was a difficult case — and I would definitely recommend Amanda to anybody needing support.

"Couldn't recommend enough"

Honestly couldn't recommend Amanda Sheppard enough — the hours of hard work she put into our case meant we walked away with the best case scenario. From start to finish the communication was great. Couldn't fault her work.

Christian — April 2025 · Verified Review

"Excellent service"

Despite Amanda having many other clients, it always felt that we were the only one due to the time she gave us. Amanda was always there, answering my many questions at all times — often going above and beyond. My son was supported, represented and given a future.

Common Questions

Military Law — Questions We're Asked

If your question isn't here, call us any time. We're happy to talk through your situation with no obligation.

Yes — completely. Legal Aid at service police stations is free for everyone, regardless of income or the nature of the allegation. This applies in the UK and at all British Sovereign Base Areas including overseas postings. You should always request legal representation before answering any questions.
Yes. You are entitled to request a specific solicitor rather than accept whoever is on duty. Tell the service police that you want E&L Legal and give them our number: 0151 725 0070. We will attend regardless of time or location wherever possible.
AGAI (Army General and Administrative Instruction) covers the full range of administrative disciplinary action available to the Army. It can result in loss of rank, pay, or service — without ever going to a Court Martial. You absolutely should take legal advice as soon as you receive notice of AGAI action. The earlier we are involved, the more we can do to protect your position.
Legal Aid for Courts Martial is assessed by the Armed Forces Criminal Legal Aid Authority (AFCLA). Unlike civilian Legal Aid, it takes into account the nature of the charge and the complexity of the case rather than simply your income. We assess AFCLA eligibility immediately and advise you on your options — including private representation where Legal Aid is not available.
Yes. We cover all Military Police Stations in British Sovereign Base Areas including Cyprus, as well as other overseas postings. Call us as soon as possible — early contact gives us the best chance of protecting your rights from the outset, wherever you are.
Yes — if you believe the verdict or sentence was wrong, you have the right to appeal to the Court Martial Appeal Court. There are strict time limits so you should contact us as soon as possible after conviction. We will advise honestly on whether an appeal has merit and represent you through the full process.
